History of Clovenstone Boxing
Clovenstone Boxing Club's story is one of community spirit, dedication, and the transformative power of sport. Founded on November 5, 1993, by Rab McEwan, the club's origins are deeply rooted in the Clovenstone community of Edinburgh. Rab, a former international amateur boxer with an impressive record of 100 bouts from his time with the renowned Meadowbank club, wasn't just passionate about boxing; he was also the school janitor at Clovenstone Primary School. This dual role placed him at the heart of the local area and gave him a unique insight into the needs of its residents.

Recognizing the potential of some unused huts within the school grounds, Rab envisioned creating a space where young people could learn discipline, build confidence, and channel their energy positively. With the crucial support and permission of the school's headmaster, he undertook the task of combining these huts, transforming them into a rudimentary but functional gym. This marked the humble beginnings of Clovenstone Boxing Club.
From these modest beginnings, the club began to grow, attracting local youth and establishing itself as a valuable community asset. As the club's reputation grew, so did its need for better facilities. This led to successful applications for funding from various sources, most notably the National Lottery. This vital funding enabled the club to move into more suitable and purpose-built premises, marking a significant milestone in its development.
Clovenstone Boxing Club's impact extends far beyond simply training boxers. It has become a vital support system for many in the community, particularly those facing challenges such as recovering drug addicts. The club provides a structured environment, a sense of belonging, and positive role models, helping individuals rebuild their lives and find a sense of purpose.
The club caters to a diverse range of individuals, from complete beginners taking their first steps into the world of boxing to seasoned competitors with aspirations of national and international success. They offer classes for men, women, and young people as young as 5, fostering an inclusive and welcoming atmosphere. With around 30 registered boxers at any given time, the club has produced several Scottish development title winners, showcasing the quality of coaching and training provided.

Beyond competitive boxing, Clovenstone emphasizes the importance of fitness and well-being. Their keep-fit program attracts individuals from various walks of life, including police officers, lawyers, army personnel, and students from Heriot Watt University. This diverse membership highlights the club's appeal as a place for anyone seeking to improve their physical and mental health.
The legacy of Rab McEwan continues through his son, Craig, a former Commonwealth Games bronze medalist and successful professional boxer. Craig has taken the reins of the club, inheriting his father's passion and dedication to the community. He is committed to upholding the values upon which the club was founded and ensuring its continued success for generations to come, continuing to provide a positive influence on the lives of countless individuals in the Clovenstone area and beyond. Craig coaches several classes and offeres 1-2-1 sessions in the gym.
